Studio General Information

Back in 1988, Bob's first 'voice recording studio' consisted of a 2 track reel-to-reel recorder and a microphone, where the 'announcer booth' was his wife's walk-in closet in the master bedroom of their rented duplex (all the clothes created excellent isolation and noise reduction!) and there was a tremendous amount of running back and forth to operate the tape machine's transport controls in the adjacent room.

Through the years, Bob's recording environment and equipment have changed dramatically! Now, his studio offers digital recording, computer-based recording, editing, and mixing, an exquisite vacuum tube microphone, classic tube microphone preamps, and a 24 bit 96 kHz digital processing chain. Like many other voice performers and musicians, Bob's studio is a converted room in his home, but with a high enough level of sophistication to make it perfectly suitable for the needs of many of his clients.

Phone Patch

During the past few years, the "phone patch" has become the most common way for people to visit the studio.

Why? Convenience! Here's how it works. If you have a phone or a speakerphone on your desk, you already own all the equipment you need to do your part. While sitting comfortably in that big chair behind your desk, call the studio at the previously agreed time for your phone patch.

At the studio, the same technology used by radio talk shows allows the phone line to be connected directly into the mixer board at the studio. Understand, however, that the phone line audio is never a part of the actual recording, the phone is simply your 'intercom' to and from the studio. Everyone in the studio is able to hear you, and you can hear everything going on in the studio. Even as the recording takes place, you may interact normally with the performer, giving any direction that you desire.

At the end of the session, all you have to do is hang up the phone. At the studio, the audio is edited and mastered, then sent to you via e-mail attachment or FTP transfer, or burned to disc and sent via FedEx.

It's easy to see why so many producers and directors are choosing phone patch recording as a convenient way to 'visit the studio' using considerably less time and energy.
